    When I realized that I was going to have to find a way to qualify my mother for Medi-Cal, I felt lost. I wanted to protect what little she had, but had no clue how to do it. On December 8, 1999, I received a notice from your office that she had been qualified for Medi-Cal. I was amazed and pleased at the speed that you were able to accomplish this feat. Six years ago, I had to qualify my father for Medi-Cal. This took me five months, several meetings with Medi-Cal, a lot of frustration and time lost from my work to accomplish what you did in just one monthís time.

    I just wanted to say thank you again for everything you did to help my family and I obtain Medi-Cal coverage for my husband. I donít know what we would have done without you. Iím sure that if we had not had your help, my husbandís application would have been denied and I would have ended up using most, if not all, of our remaining assets paying for his hospital care.

    During the processing of his case, I admired your persistence during this five month ordeal and the way you handled the situations that came up where you felt the county was not interpreting the Medi-Cal regulations properly or their inappropriate requests for additional information. In each instance, you pursued the matter and did not relent in your efforts to get them to change their position or make a proper decision. After all your efforts to prove the county was misinterpreting their own regulations and ultimately suggesting we elicit an attorney, we prevailed when the State intervened and the county had to reverse their position. My husbandís Medi-Cal benefits were then approved, retroactive to the original application date. Had it not been for your knowledge and expertise, I probably would have had to sacrifice even more of our assets in order to receive any type of Medi-Cal benefits for my husband.

  • When my sister and I met with you on Thursday, we were overwhelmed, quite frankly. You suggested we contact Medi-Cal Regulations Specialists for assistance. I couldnít get to a telephone fast enough. That afternoon I spoke with the M.R.S. Regional Manager. On Monday, I changed my schedule and drove to Rohnert Park to meet with M.R.S.     On behalf of my family and I, we would like to thank you and your staff for doing a fabulous job in getting Medi-Cal for my wife.

    After having extensive surgery in September, a broken hip, other medical complications and her medical insurance reaching its lifetime total, the insurance was no longer there to help with the bills. Also, because of her age at the time of the incidents, Medicare was not available.

    After finding out from the hospital that her bill was well over one hundred thousand dollars and growing, we approached the business office at the hospital to see if we qualified for Medi-Cal. After a brief discussion with the Medi-Cal officer assigned with our case, it was denied and he suggested that we start making payments.

    After investigating the situation further, I was informed to go to the Southern Caregivers Resource Center and explain to them the situation we encountered. They called you at M.R.S. and made an appointment for which you graciously reviewed our documents and calculated that YES INDEED, WE QUALIFIED FOR MEDI-CAL FOR MY WIFE!

    After we filled out documents and showed evidence of our financial status to send to our county, we were continuously and persistently denied by an inexperienced Medi-Cal analyst assigned to our case. The only way you could get this resolved was to contact her supervisor and fax them documents to prove we were compliant with their Medi-Cal regulations book and asked them why we were denied. It was somewhat approved and you, Kathryn, had to go in again and explain to them the coding the Medi-Cal analyst had inserted, was indeed wrong and told them to correct it. Finally, it worked.

    There was no way that I could communicate with Medi-Cal personnel because of the terminology and coding. Kathryn, you were able to talk to them and get a supervisor involved when it was needed.

    Thank you for your diligence and persistence; it finally paid off. Our family could not have ever done what you did for us. Although my wife passed away, bills are manageable now.
